(AllHipHop News) Tory Lanez looks to be the next star to emerge from Toronto. His single “Say It” is a Top 10 hit on the Hot R&B Songs and R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay charts. The track has also led the Billboard Twitter Emerging Artists chart.
As Lanez’s buzz continues to grow, comparisons to another rapper-singer from Canada are sure to follow. There have already been a few instances that appeared like Tory was taking shots at OVO leader Drake. Tory once tweeted he did not like people referring to his hometown as “The 6,” a nickname made popular by the “6 God” rhymer.
Lanez also seemed to throw a subtle jab at Drizzy during a freestyle on Sway In The Morning when he rapped, “I know these n*ggas about to act scary. T.O. n*gga, only spitting without the Blackberry.” Drake famously rapped from a Blackberry phone during his own freestyle on Hot 97 years before.
During an interview with The Breakfast Club, Tory downplayed any speculation he has issues with Drake. The 23-year-old Mad Love artist even came across as if he has mellowed out about Toronto being referred to as The 6.
“Me personally, I feel like the term is kind of corny. I later took [the tweet] down, because I realized I didn’t want to alienate a certain audience. And anything that gives the city legs, regardless, should be supported,” said Lanez.
As far as those Blackberry bars, Tory did not directly mentioned if they were meant for Drake. He skirted around the question when it was brought up.
“Is that a shot?” asked Lanez. “I was on Sway, and I didn’t rap with a Blackberry. I was stating the obvious.”
